Sergey took up music at the age of five inspired by the band Shadows. The guitar was to become his primary instrument.
When he was 7 or 8 he put together his first band along with his classmate Nikolay Biryukov who played the drums. Later they were joined by the keyboardist Vsevolod Matveev and the bassist Evgeniy Tikhomirov. Together, they sent the crowds wild on school functions.

When Sergey got back from the military service in 1987 he was invited by Vassily Shumov to play the lead guitar in his band Tsentr.

In 1987 the band went through a transformation with Sergey’s school band friends joined in. These were later referred to as the 'golden line-up'.

They recorded three albums (Dityatya, Ot zvonka do zvonka, Sdelano v Parizhe). On the third one, they were joined by French musicians invited by the Kraftwerk producer Maxime Schmitt.

Working with Maxime Schmitt, recording in professional studios and the Tsentr shows in Paris in Brussels in 1989 made a deep impact on Sergey as a musician, composer and producer. This was to define his attitudes and approaches to music production for the rest of his life.

In 1990-91 Sergey was invited by Joanna Stingray to play the lead guitar and manage her band. The band was rehearsing for a major tour that went successfully in the Ukraine where they played 20 shows.

In 1994 Sergey and Vassily Shumov decide to record a new album with the older line-up. Back then Vassily resided in Los Angeles where Sergey came for a month from Paris. They made an acoustic recording playing two guitars. Later Sergey returned to Moscow to get a hold of Alexey Loktev (keyboards), Valery Vinogradov (guitar), Evgeniy Tikhomirov (bass), Igor Ivankovich (drums) and bring them to L.A. where they recorded together in 1995. The record called Bryulik was released under the label Khoroshaya Studiya (ORT-Records) on cassetes in 1996, and later re-released by Soyuz in 2013.

From 1990 on, Sergey worked with Mongool Shuudan as the lead guitarist, arranger and producer.

Simultaneously, Sergey worked with Ivan Sokolovsky (Nochnoy Prospekt, Joanna Stingray) on his new project called Soft Animals.

Ivan enrolled a lot of musicians, but himself on the keyboards, Sergey on the guitar and bass, Dmitry Kutergin (Nochnoy Prospekt, Doktor) on Dmitry Kutergin and Konstantin Mikheev (Nikolay Kopernik, Sakura) remained at the core of the band.
P.S. In 1989 Sergey with the participation of Dmitry Kutergin arranged and recorded several songs on his studio for Moscow author Yuri Razumovsky.

The line-up toured extensively in Russia, the Baltic and the Ukraine. In 1993-94 they released a CD and played a series of very well received shows.
A famous French cellist and bassist Vincent Segal took part in the recording. Vincent also played several concerts with Soft Animals.

On the flight back from LA to Paris in December 1994 Sergey composed the first song for a project that was later called Systemy. Back in Moscow, he started to prep the songs for recording using a sequencer, a sampler, a few guitars and an ADAT recorder Alesis. Later Sergey invited his musician friends to re-record some tracks and mastered the album at the Liga studios in Moscow. The record titled Surveillance Sattelites was finalized in 1996 and released on cassettes in 1997 by ORT Records.
The line-up of the album, besides Sergey, included Sergey Reshetnikov (bass), Ivan Sokolovsky (keyboards, synthesizers), Igor Ivankovich (drums), Valery Vinogradov (guitar, back vocals), Jean Michel Abou (back vocals), Natalia Scherbina ((back vocals) subsequently, Sergey became the author and composer of the songs for her project "Oceanic"), Sergey Matrov (bass), Alexander Sychev (electric piano), Inna Muraenko (back vocals). A track from the album called Crazy Days (Sumaschedshiye dni) was a hit on the radio, and was heavily rotated on Radio Maximum for two months. The title song Surveillance Sattelites featured on the mix CD Nashi v gorode.

The 90’s saw new developments in dance music such as house, trance, break beat and hip-hop. Sergey had always been fascinated by these subcultures and enjoyed getting involved in the dance music market.

He started spending time with DJs, which lead to collaboration with such Moscow performers as DJ Grad, DJ Kolya, DJ Fonarev. The tracks were played on dance radios like DFM and Megapolis FM. Some of them were later released by DJ Fonarev’s label Atmosfera, and are available here.

Around 2000 Sergey started collaborating with his friend Oleg Litvishko making musics for films, TV and commercials. This was a valuable experience for Sergey who learned how to work with video.

Between projects, Sergey and Oleg played and recorded together with Sergey doing bass, guitar and vocal tracks.

Together they released an album called False Alarm, where they were joined by Andrey Logutov who wrote lyrics. Later, Andrey provided lyrics for some English songs for Systemy.

Sergey continues working with Oleg in both recording and live shows. In 2008/9 Oleg took part in Systemy’s Heart of the Northern Lights album.

In 2004 Sergey was approached by Albert Yegazarov who asked him to write music for a documentary about the history of the Crete. The film was released in 2006 as The Mysteries of the Crete. The Secret of Atlantis. The work took nearly 2 years and involved trips to the island.

At the end of 2007 Sergey started preparing material for a new Systemy project called Heart of the Northern Lights. By late summer 2008 it was completely recorded at Sergey’s home studio. However, he was set to find fellow musicians who could share the vision and the pulse of the album, and record the parts of drums, bass and keyboards. The search took 9 years. In 2014 Sergey was lucky to find his dream line-up in Bangalore where he finally recorded drums, keyboards and vocals.

Besides Sergey, the album features many wonderful musicians from India: Sitthart Kamath on piano and keyboards, Yadhunandan Nagaraj on drums and percussion, Prakash Kn on bass guitar and Premik Jolly on synthesizers and recording.

Drums, keyboards and back vocals were recorded at the AREA 51 Productions studio. Premik Jolly served as the recording engineer and Sergey’s co-producer in India.

While recording, Sergey conceived ideas and drafts for a new album Sweet Vertigo.

The album featured the Indian singer Maria Tom. Due to technical issues the record could not be finalized and mastered in India, so Sergey approached his friend, the Italian producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Fabio Costantio.

In November 2016 Sergey started mastering Heart of the Northern Lights at the NuevArte studio in Italy.

He was joined by Italian musicians Fabio Costantino on sax and Giusepper Distefano on piano. Mastering was done by Carlo Longo along with Fabio and Sergey. Carlo and Fabio co-produced the record in Italy. In March 2017 the album was ready, and it was released in June by the American label CDBaby.

In December 2017 Sergey went to India to work on the material for his next release called Sweet Vertigo. In February 2018 the Indian leg of production was complete.

Indian musician and composer Siddhart Kamath, who worked with Sergey on the previous record, co-produced and played the majority of piano parts on the new album.
